First of all this is beautiful sand with a gorgeous red color you won’t find anywhere else (trust me, I looked…) Perfect beach-sand texture which my corys love to play in. Everyone complaining about cloudy water simply didn’t rinse enough and I’m sure it wasn’t for lack of trying but you need to know this stuff needs A LOT of rinsing. Best way to do it is a 5-gallon bucket and a hose-place the nozzle of the hose in the bottom of the bucket and pour the sand on top (best to do this outside because there WILL be a giant dust cloud). Turn on the hose and let it run until the water is clear. Go have a snack, do a load of laundry, move the hose around a few times to make sure you’re stirring up all the sand…If you don’t have access to a hose or outdoor area you can do it in the sink but it will take some effort-for this method put half the sand in a 2-3 gallon mop bucket then cover with a few inches of water and give it a good stir. Wait a few seconds for any sand particles to settle then pour the dirty water off the top. Repeat until your ancestors whisper “that’s enough child” or about 100x. When you think you’re almost done, you’re probably about halfway there. It’s a pain but totally worth it-done right your tank should be clear in minutes after filling and you won’t have to worry about clouding up the water during routine cleaning.
